Conservative Stampede to Endorse Obama Continues-Hitchens Latest Conservative to Flip to Obama
Poor Rush Limbaugh. He just can’t get over the fact that Colin Powell thought that Barack Obama was a better man to be President than John McCain. In Rush Limbaugh’s eyes, the only reason that Powell could have possibly endorsed Obama was because they share the same skin color. Yesterday Rush has this to say: Now, back to General Powell. I just want to button this up, because the Drive-Bys had a tizzy over my allegation that his nomination was about race. Well, let me say it louder, and let me say it even more plainly: It was totally about race! The Powell nomination or endorsement was totally about race. I have some news for Rushbo. Many other prominent Conservative African Americans have also endorsed Barack Obama for President. Let me name a few other Republicans who are also voting for Obama because they are black:
HBO's "Section 60: Arlington National Cemetery" Unending War Brings Unending Pain
I cried my eyes out last night. I sobbed till my eyes were swollen and I felt exhausted b y grief after watching “Section 60: Arlington National Cemetery” on HBO. I didn’t need to torture myself by watching this documentary about the burial ground for U.S. military personnel killed in Iraq and Afghanistan but I felt compelled to do so. I feel so impotent in my ability to stop this madness that I take every opportunity to focus on this tragedy in small ways to stay connected to the grief and pain felt by the families of our soldiers wounded or killed in these wars. Somehow it all circles back to that photo that I first saw in the NY Times. John Moore captured a haunting image in Section 60 of Arlington National Cemetery. The photo ran on Memorial Day and it shows Mary McHugh, lying face down on the grave of her fiancé, Sgt. James J. Regan, killed in Iraq in February. The grief and pain just roll off that photo which I keep near my desk and look at every day.
"The Oracle" Fails To Forsee Financial Crisis-Does This Mean the End of Financial Deregulation?
If there is a silver lining to the collapse of our financial markets perhaps it is a chance to put the brakes on the GOP’s manic obsession with deregulation. For years I’ve bemoaned the effects of The Telecommunications Act of 1996, signed by President Clinton which deregulated broadcasting, allowing multiple ownerships that created the corporate monopoly of public airwaves. Regulations on broadcasting were vital to ensuring diversity in ownership and thus diversity of opinion and programming. By tearing down the walls that separated commerce from the rights of the people to have equal access to public airwaves, the United States Government essentially sold the public airwaves to the highest bidder and the American public lost out.
