Ugly Americans

I subscribe to a wonderful literary magazine called The Sun. On the back page of every issue is a feature called Sunbeams, these are quotes from famous and not-so famous people and the wisdom I glean from this page is always welcome. This month's topic in The Sun was religion and two quotes on the back page resonated with me. The first bit of wisdom comes from Jonathan Swift; "We have just enough religion to make us hate, but not enough to make us love one another."

A Thin Democracy

have two bumper stickers on my car, one reads "Proud to be a Democrat" and the other says "Is it 2008 yet?" Because I live in Greenville, South Carolina better known as the buckle of the Bible belt as well as the home of Bob Jones University, my political statements have generated both positive and negative attention. Democrats and liberals want to get a copy of the 2008 sticker, while other similar stickers have been torn off my car and in one case defaced.

Women Who Hate Women

On the way home from work the other day I was listening to liberal talk radio on Sirus Satellite radio, the host Ed Shultz took a call from a woman who didn't like Hillary Clinton. She was vehement about her dislike of Senator Clinton and was convinced she was a spoiler if she was the Democratic Party's presidential candidate. Ed tried several times to pin the woman down to a particular position or issue that she disagreed with Senator Clinton on but the woman was unable to articulate those differences choosing instead to volley snide remarks about her personality and the fact that she didn't know any women who liked Hillary Clinton. Every time Ed asked her to give him one specific issue which caused her to part ways with the Senator, the caller returned to her personal attacks. The whole conversation disgusted me and made me ashamed. That woman was as big a sexist, misogynist as any chauvinist male I've ever encountered. I don't like women who don't like other women. Women who view other women as competition for men or jobs and would slit their throats in a heartbeat are the enemy. These are women who can't and shouldn't be trusted. They will act like your friend and then talk about you behind your back or worse tear you down to your boss.
