In Defense of Feminists
Rush Limbaugh: "Feminism was established so as to allow unattractive women easier access to the mainstream of society." [The Rush Limbaugh Show, 8/12/05] It's a shame the way some words in today's world have been twisted and maligned by certain factions of our society. One example is the word feminist. If you asked my female friends if they were feminists most would fall over themselves to say no. But I would disagree. Most of my friends work outside the home, believe in equal pay for equal work and are outspoken in their belief that women are just as good if not better than men at most challenges in life but yet they shrink from that word because of people like Rush Limbaugh who have linked feminism with the word Nazi, calling women who believed in equal rights, "Femi-Nazi's."
No Safer
I remember so clearly after the September 11th attack on America when people thanked God that George Bush was President because he would keep them safe. Four years after that attack by terrorists against America, the 9-11 commission says America is no safer from terrorism, that we've wasted these last four years. The commission gave the Bush administration and the Republican dominated Congress failing grades on prevention efforts aimed at thwarting another terrorist attack on American soil. "While terrorist are learning and adapting, our government is still moving at a crawl," said Thomas H. Kean, the 9-11 Commission's chairman and a former Republican governor of New Jersey according to the NY Times. "Many obvious steps that the American people assume have been completed have not been. Our leadership has been distracted." Yeah, I guess that war in Iraq was a little bit of a distraction.
The Two Thousand Mark
Since writers write, one would think that the most painful moments in life would be the easiest to write about. One would think that moments of angst would yield plenty of fodder to feed the machine but that's not always the case. Sometimes turning points in our lives prove so painful and so visceral that you have to have some distance from the experience to comprehend it and be able to adequately describe it and deal with it. That's the way I feel about the war in Iraq. This war has had such a profound effect on my own life and on our country that I think about it every day. It still affects my relationship with my husband. I try very hard not to dwell on it in my discussions with him and that's difficult because he is my best friend.
