Hope Won

A friend called Weds. November 5th and yelled into the phone, “WE WON!” Oprah Winfrey was sporting a t-shirt the day after the election that read, “Hope Won.” For once the right man and the best man won. Election night was scary, I wanted to rejoice but I felt like I couldn’t breathe until they called the election at 11pm. Now I just feel joy and relief that it’s over and for once I’m on the winning side.

Changing the World One Vote and One Woman at a Time

I am so filled with hope and optimism right now I feel like I’m glowing. Sunday night I attended “Women for Obama” a benefit dinner held in downtown Greenville. I had invited a group of my friends and hoped that some of them would show up along with 20 or so others. When I arrived the line went out the door and down the street. The place was filled to capacity and the energy inside that room was intense. I saw my staunch old lady Democratic Party friends, alongside 40-something career women and women of all ages, genders and lifestyles. It was freaking amazing. Everyone was talking loud and laughing and just connecting on some level that you only seem to reach with old friends and close family. Most of us cried at least once and spoke of our hope that for once the right man would get the job. There were many memorable t-shirt and button slogans, my personal favorites were “Old white women for Obama” and the ever-popular “That One”.

Karma is a Bitch

Last night on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart some video of John McCain at a town hall meeting in 2000 was played and I couldn’t believe my eyes or ears. A young woman complained to John McCain about her father, a doctor who was forced into a higher tax bracket because of his professional achievement and presidential candidate and straight talker John McCain very patiently explained to this young woman the responsibilities of those who earn more to pay more in taxes. This is the same man who has vilified Barack Obama and Joe Biden for justifying a higher tax bracket for the wealthy and accused them of Socialism because they dare to defend the practice of spreading the wealth by taxation. I was dumbfounded to think that the man running for president today in 2008 was once a plain spoken, straight talking man of principals. John McCain has sold his soul to the GOP devil to win the presidency and I’m very saddened for him. He says that he would rather ‘lose an election than lose a war’ but he seems perfectly willing to lose his reputation for frankness and sincerity to win this election.
