Myths about the GOP

There are certain myths about the Republican Party that irritate the hell out of me. The myth that Republicans are fiscal conservatives should have been dispelled over the last six years of the Bush Administration which has been marked by budget busting deficits, massive government spending, tax cuts and more tax cuts. Currently our 'in name' only fiscally conservative President is promising to spend "whatever it takes" to repair the hurricane devastated Gulf region, while continuing to spend billions of dollars a day in Iraq and Afghanistan and extend his massive tax cuts for the rich. Another myth about Republicans that persists despite abundant evidence to the contrary is the one about Republicans having higher moral and ethical standards. For evidence that decries this fairy tale you need look no farther than the headlines of today's newspaper. House Majority Leader Tom Delay has been indicted on charges of fraud. There's nothing really new about this story since Rep. Delay has been accused of ethical violations in the past and managed to evade any long term consequences. The latest charges however, from a Texas grand jury renew hope that this slimy thug may finally be held accountable for his disgusting and illegal conduct while serving as an elected official.

Our Clueless President

President George W. Bush still offers absolutely no leadership to our country but occasionally he provides some much needed comic relief. Today in a front page article from The Associated Press published in The Greenville News there was this little gem, "President Bush urged Americans on Monday to cut back on unnecessary travel to make up for fuel shortages caused by Hurricane Rita. (next sentence) He prepared to take his "seventh" trip to the Gulf Coast....If it makes sense for the citizen out there to curtail nonessential travel, it darn sure makes sense for federal employees," Bush said.

Dead President

The fawning and relentless media coverage of Ronald Reagan's death this week reminds me of my maternal grandparents My mother's father was a hard drinking man who could be both charming and a total jerk. He and my grandmother fought like cats and dogs. They used to argue in Polish so I wouldn't know what they were saying. Even as a kid, I still knew the words were angry. After he died, my grandmother almost immediately anointed him to Sainthood and I took to calling him Saint Louie. All of the bad memories were washed away, leaving only the good times to reminisce about. Since his death, former President Ronald Reagan has also been elevated to Sainthood and his presidency is now being viewed as an unqualified success.
