Racism and the Republican Party-Go Together Like Peanut Butter and Jelly
In case you missed it, the former chairman of the SC Elections Commission, GOP activist Rusty DePass made a racist comment directed at First Lady Michelle Obama. Upon learning that a gorilla had escaped from The River Banks Zoo in Columbia, DePass wrote this comment on his Face book page, “I’m sure it’s one of Michelle’s ancestors-probably harmless.” When word leaked out via the internet,http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/06/14/rusty-depass-south-caroli_n_215439.html the comment was removed and DePass later admitted to WIS-TV that the remark was referring to Michelle Obama. DePass sounded surprised that anyone took offense to his statement, “I am as sorry as I can be if I offended anyone. The comment was clearly made in jest.”
Pot Meets Kettle When GOP Talks Racism
Whores and politicians become respectable if they stick around long enough, as someone once observed, and the same is plainly true of media personalities – especially in a culture that never pauses long enough to remember anything. Where amnesia is the rule, there can be no accountability for the likes of Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Patrick Buchanan and the rest of the broadcast mob denouncing the “racism” of Sonia Sotomayor. If anyone remembers who they are and what they have said over the years, their complaints about the Latina Supreme Court nominee will only elicit raucous laughter.
Even Republicans prefer Powell over Limbaugh!
A CNN poll released yesterday found that former Secretary of State Colin Powell is more popular thanVice President Cheney and Rush Limbaugh. While 70 percent of Americans have a favorable opinion of Powell, Cheney and Limbaugh are only viewed favorably by 37 percent and 30 percent, respectively. Even Republicans prefer Powell over Limbaugh, 64 percent to 62 percent.
