Optimism versus Realism Inglis Style
In a recent editorial comment published in The Greenville News U.S. Representative Bob Inglis wrote an optimistic breezy column about how all Americans should be thankful to live in the good ole U.S.A. and how great our lives were and how much we had to be thankful for. He referenced Jesus several times and talked about forgiveness, sinners and hope. I'm thinking that perhaps Rep. Inglis would be happier and more fulfilled as a preacher than our elected representative to the U.S. House of Representatives
Going Down for the Last Time
If you truly believe that the government that governs least governs best, you ought to be in hog heaven right about now. After six long years of a Republican dominated U.S. Senate and House and a Republican president this notion has been put to a test. For evidence of how the anti-government forces are faring look no further than the June 27th edition of The New York Times. In front page coverage NY Times reporter Eric Lipton reports on the estimated $2 billion fraud and waste perpetuated by the federal government under the guise of Hurricane Katrina relief and recovery. The cluelessness of this administration and their minions was summed up quite well by Donna M. Daniels, acting deputy director of recovery at FEMA. Daniels told a House Panel this month, "We did in fact put into place never-before-used and untested processes. Clearly, because they were untested, they were more subject to error and fraud." No, duh. Just ask the victims of Hurricane Katrina who are still living in mobile homes or what's left of their ruined homes how they feel about being used as guinea pigs in a failed disaster relief experiment.
How to Raise a Bigot
Singer, song-writer Mary J. Blige calls them "haterators," that's street slang for people who spew hatred and negativity. The poster girl for haters would be Ann Coulter but I don't want to waste my time and energy even talking about her. Colleen P. Graffy, deputy assistant secretary of state for public diplomacy, provides a recent example of negative vitriol with her comments in an interview with the British Broadcasting Corporation. Graffy had this to say about the suicides of three prisoners at the military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, "Taking their own lives was not necessary, but it certainly is a good P.R. move." Take note of the fact that Ms. Graffy's job is public diplomacy. Ms. Graffy works for Karen Hughes, under secretary of state for public diplomacy, on -get ready for this one- improving the United States image abroad, especially in Islamic countries. The NY Times reports that it is unlikely that Ms. Graffy will be reprimanded for her callous remarks probably because they mirror the attitudes and comments of other prominent members of the Bush administration.
