Memories of September 11th

Five years ago on September 11, 2001 I was thousands of miles away from home. My husband and I were vacationing in paradise, the island of Phuket, Thailand. It was evening in Phuket, and we were eating dinner with friends at an outdoor café. One of our friends had finished eating and decided to browse at some of the nearby shops. A little while later Jackie came running up to the table telling us to come watch television in a nearby jewelry shop, she said something terrible was happening in New York City. We rushed into the shop, just in time to see the second plane hit the World Trade Center. We stared at the screen in stunned disbelief. None of us knew quite what to say. We watched television for a bit longer then decided to head back to the hotel as quickly as possible. In the cab on the way home I remember looking at my husband and saying that Osama bin Laden had planned this, that no one but him could have planned such a deadly and terrible plot against America.

The Courage to Question Authority

finally had a chance to watch George Clooney's historical film, "Good-Night and Good Luck" with my son last night. The historical parallels between the McCarthy era and the present administration and the clash between the politically powerful and journalistic truth was truly chilling. Thankfully despite the very real consequences of standing up to Senator McCarthy in 1954, the chairman of CBS, William Paley backed his war-tested anchor man and allowed Murrow to publicly challenge Senator McCarthy for the first time on his TV documentary series "See It Now." Murrow and his staff cleverly chose to run news-reel clips of Senator McCarthy using his own words and bully pulpit against him, thereby allowing McCarthy to hang himself in the court of public opinion.

Seeing God

People see God every day; they just don't recognize him.------Pearl Bailey I saw God last week as I was sitting in my HIV screening room interviewing a woman addicted to crack cocaine. I mentioned that I had a 17 year old son and that today happened to be the first day of school for him. The woman who I will call Ginny asked me what grade a child would be in who was 10 years old? It turns out that Ginny had two children ages 10 and 12 that she gave up for adoption 6 years earlier. She said giving up her kids made her feel like her heart had been ripped out of her chest. We cried together.
