Time for the Democratic Party to Throw Lieberman Under the Bus
Would somebody in charge please throw Senator Joe Lieberman out of the Democratic Pary? If he were Catholic I would vote for him to be excommunicated. I’ve had it with this turn coat, treasonous Democrat in name only.
Lieberman’s latest outrage is his endorsement and vocal support of Senator John McCain. It’s hard to believe that 8 years ago the Senator from Connecticut was chosen as the Vice Presidential candidate by Democratic Presidential nominee Al Gore. The NY Times reports this week that Lieberman is technically an independent but…he is skipping the Democratic National Convention, after being stripped of his super delegate status and may turn up as this election season’s Zell Miller at the Republican National Convention instead. Lieberman didn’t even wait until McCain was the presumptive nominee of the GOP, he endorsed his old buddy back in December. Besides being stripped of his super delegate status the only other fall out from Lieberman’s endorsement of the GOP candidate is his official portrait has been removed from the Connecticut Democratic Party Headquarters…oh, the shame of it all!
In his 2006 re-election campaign, Lieberman ran and won as an independent but pledged his support to a Democratic presidential candidate in 2008. Lieberman apparently had a change of heart after traveling to Iraq with Senator McCain in November 2007. After that trip Lieberman gave McCain his endorsement and he doesn’t shy away from talk of a cabinet post in the McCain administration. The NY Times says Lieberman accompanied Mr. McCain to a prayer breakfast recently and said, “I’ll do whatever I can for John.”
I think one of Senator Lieberman’s constituents Mary Hadley, a retiree from New Haven sums it up best, “It’s typical Lieberman: He doesn’t represent us. He needs to switch to the Republican Party, is what he needs to do. It’s like come out of the closet man.”
I couldn’t have said that better myself. Lieberman needs to have his committee chairmanship and seniority privileges taken away by the Democratic Party. For those who worry about the delicate balance of power in the Senate, I would say “with friends like Lieberman-who needs enemies?”

Lieberman’s unusual take on “the facts”
Matt Yglesias noted this afternoon that Joe Lieberman is “probably beyond shark-jumping at this point.” That’s no doubt true, but the Connecticut senator continues to push the embarrassment envelope at every available opportunity. Tuesday morning, for example, Lieberman, after praising Gen. David Petraeus and ambassador Ryan Crocker, seemed utterly dumbfounded by the fact that some senators are displeased by conditions in Iraq.
There’s a lot to digest here, but this was the quote that stood out for me: “Hey, let’s be honest about this: The Iraqi political leadership has achieved a lot more political reconciliation and progress since September than the American political leadership has. So we’ve got to give credit for that.”
This is just so wrong, it’s hard to know where to start. The obvious problem, of course, is that the senator is contradicting reality. Political reconciliation in Iraq hasn’t occurred. Perhaps Lieberman missed this report from the weekend: “A new assessment of U.S. policy in Iraq by the same experts who advised the original Iraq Study Group concludes that political progress is ‘so slow, halting and superficial’ and political fragmentation ‘so pronounced’ that the United States is no closer to being able to leave Iraq than it was a year ago.”
But it’s also worth noting that the comparison between Iraq and the United States is itself foolish. As Yglesias put it, “America has a heated political debate, but liberals and conservatives aren’t shooting mortars at each other and we don’t have pitched battles in the streets. To compare the situation in Iraq to the persistence of strong partisan disagreement in the United States is idiotic.”
Quite right. For a U.S. senator to compare Iraqi officials to Americans, and insist that Iraqis are somehow more impressive, is kind of offensive, in addition to being wrong.

Keep up the good work. You've voiced an opinion here, which I've heard from other people.
Sounds to me like you'll make a good candidate for a term in the Congress of the United States.
