Meet Joe Wilson: Health Care Hypocrite by Adam Weinstein
Poor Joe Wilson. The conservative Republican representative from South Carolina stepped in it Wednesday night when he broke with centuries of decorum by screaming, “You lie!” at President Obama during his health-care speech to a joint session of Congress. Cut the man some slack. He’s passionate! I know this because he told me, in the sole message that blazes across his campaign Web site: JOE WILSON IS PASSIONATE ABOUT STOPPING GOVERNMENT RUN HEALTH CARE! Except that he’s not—at least not when it comes to his, and his family’s, government-run health care. As a retired Army National Guard colonel, Wilson gets a lot of benefits (one of which, apparently, was not a full appreciation of the customs, traditions, and courtesies that mandate respect for one’s commander in chief). And with four sons in the armed services, the entire Wilson brood has enjoyed multiple generations of free military medical coverage, known as TRICARE.
Beck & DeMint Join Radical Right Wing Groups to Host 9/12 Project
This Saturday, right-wing protesters will gather in Washington, DC for a march to oppose health reform, President Obama, “corruption,” and “an overall conversion to a socialist style government.” The event, scheduled intentionally on Sept. 12 to coincide with the anniversary of the day following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, was conceived largely by Fox News’ Glenn Beck. Beck, the McCarthyite Fox News talk show host who has lost dozens of advertisers for calling Obama a “racist,” is a relentless promoter of his 9/12 Project. However, most of the day-to-day organizing has been orchestrated by a now familiar set of lobbyists and Republican operatives who have helped plan anti-Obama “grassroots” tea party events since February. In addition, a set of far-right groups are supporting the event, bringing along self-described “American mob members” to join in on the Obama-bashing.
South Carolina Republican Heckles the President Embarrasses our State
Since last night’s outburst, Joe Wilson’s Democratic challenger Rob Miller has raised $444,000 from folks around the country disgusted by his outburst. That’s over $200,000 per word, a costly act of free speech for ole Joe. There’s still time to help Rob Miller defeat Joe Wilson, go to www.actblue.com Showing that once more that Republicans have no class and no respect for government and Americans, Rep. Joe Wilson of South Carolina yelled out “You lie!” when President Obama reassured Americans that his health care reform plan did not include illegal aliens. Politico: “There are also those who claim that our reform effort will insure illegal immigrants. This, too, is false - the reforms I’m proposing would not apply to those who are here illegally,” President Obama said. A loud voice from the Republican side of the hall answered, “Lie” — my colleague Glenn Thrush reports it was Rep. Joe Wilson (R - S.C.) — drawing a second “It’s not true,” from Obama and a shake of Nancy Pelosi’s head. The bill is designed to exclude those immigrants, though some Republicans have called for more explicit bans on funding for illegal immigrants and have claimed the bill will funnel money to illegal immigrants. FactCheck.org described those claims as “false” and noted that one version of the legislation already includes an explicit bar on federal funding for illegal immigrants’ health care.
