The Bible Belt

The Bible Belt

by David Shumate

It’s a vast and fertile land. Soybeans and corn grow in this soil.
Wheat and tobacco. A little sorghum. It’s not dramatic terrain
with ocean waves crashing against the cliffs. It’s mostly gently
rolling plains. Long stretches of prairie. You know you’ve entered
it when the signs along the highway begin telling you what God
wants you to do. Those who live here regard it as their duty to
make these things known. Otherwise the rest of the country
would be left in the dark. The bibles in this region are larger than
elsewhere. Most weigh over a hundred pounds. It takes two strong
men to lift them into a pickup truck to haul off to church. All the
women dress up on Sundays. And all the white men shake hands.

Brit Stan Brock gives free healthcare to U.S.

Thousands of Americans yesterday received free healthcare… thanks to a Brit who has been dubbed Florence Nightingale. Stan Brock, 72, has set up a huge makeshift hospital in an arena in Inglewood, California. And in the week that Republican politicians described the NHS as “evil and Orwellian”, people walked for miles to get there. They queued in the hope of grabbing a wristband guaranteeing them free care. Some slept overnight in cars bringing kids for immunisations.

Others queued for consultations about cancer treatment. Hundreds of health specialists worked for free and it’s thought that by the time the eight-day event ends on Tuesday, £1million worth of care will have been given to 20,000 patients. The service was provided by the charity Remote Area Medical. Stan, originally from Preston, Lancs, said the USA should adopt our NHS model. He said: “Something has to be done.”

Guns and Crazy Don't Mix

ABC News had a noteworthy story today on the increasing fears for President Obama’s safety because of the plethora of nutcases — many of them in fact mentally ill — who are crawling out of the woodwork and threatening Obama and anyone associated with him: Experts who track hate groups across the U.S. are growing increasingly concerned over violent rhetoric targeted at President Obama, especially as the debate over health care intensifies and a pattern of threats emerges. The Secret Service is investigating a Maryland man who held a sign reading “Death to Obama” and “Death to Michelle and her two stupid kids” outside a town hall meeting this week. And in New Hampshire, another man stood across the street from a Presidential town hall with his gun on full display.
